Apple’s iPod Touch offers some pretty stiff competition. The device is now available for just $199 with 8GB of storage space, a 1 GHz processor and a 3.5 inch 960 x 640 pixel screen.

Ranged against it are the Archos 43 which offers a 4.3 inch screen, a similar amount of memory and a price tag twenty dollars lower than the iPod Touch. The only downside is the 854 x 480 pixel screen which makes watching movies a less than stellar experience.

For a device that looks a little more like a phone, Samsung’s Galaxy Player 5.0 has all the whiz-bang wizardry of the Samsung Galaxy phones without the need to actually talk to anyone. It has twice the amount of the iPod Touch’s meager 256 MB of RAM but a slightly lower screen resolution and a ridiculously high price of $270.

Philips’ GoGear Connect 3 has a small 3.2 inch screen with a 480 x 320 pixel display. But for a similar price to the Archos 43, it also offers 16 GB of built-in storage and — unlike the iPod Touch but like other Android devices — allows the addition of another 32 GB with a MicroSD card. The 2 megapixel camera is weak but at least it’s there.

While all of those current devices are strong in some areas and weak in others, the future does look more promising. Sony’s latest Walkman, due in December, has a 4.3 inch screen, a 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Sadly, like the Samsung, it’s overpriced at $365 for the 16 GB model and $560 for the 32 GB.

It may come down to HTC’s Beat then to blow the iPod Touch off the battlefield. There’s nothing official yet but the device is rumored to have a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3 inch screen and an incredible 12 megapixel camera. If it’s also running Ice Cream Sandwich, the iPad may not be the only Apple device to see its market share shrink.
